West Penn Power Upgrades Transformer

The Pennsylvania utility company, West Penn Power, has completed a $2 million upgrade to a Greene County substation.

The project entailed swapping out a transformer for new 73-ton unit. The company replaced the transformer because the old one did not have the capacity to take on the substation’s load, should the other transformer at the substation go offline.

The substation, near Ryerson Station, serves local coal mines.

“The work was done to enhance our infrastructure and service reliability, with the new transformer providing greater redundancy than was previously available,” said David W. McDonald, West Penn Power president.

“We now have two transformers available to serve customers, with either one capable of handling the substation’s electric load, which is critical to local coal mines that operate around the clock.”
