Michigan electric customers continue to push for deregulation

Author: Adam Cain | Updated:

A recent editorial has spread all over Michigan that urges lawmakers to reinstate energy deregulation laws in an attempt lower rising electricity rates, Michigan Live reports.

According to the news source, organizations from around the country are showing their support for energy deregulation laws, with more letters being written to lawmakers and several editorials being published in area newspapers. Tripp’s Auto, one of the many companies that hopes to be able to find the best electricity rate through a competitive market, recently expressed its disapproval of the state’s current energy plan.

“We at Tripp’s Auto, along with thousands of other customers in Michigan, are tired of unnecessarily paying exorbitantly high electricity rates as a result of being held captive with no option to choose another electricity supplier,” the company wrote. “What’s worse, our rates are the highest in the Midwest.”

Neighboring Illinois is already benefiting from a deregulated market, which has allowed residents to search for the region’s best energy rate. Several retail energy providers have cropped up in the region, which has driven competition higher and in turn, rates lower.
