Illinois utility voices support for switching energy providers

Author: Adam Cain | Updated:

Illinois’ energy market has been deregulated for some time, allowing the state’s residents to shop around for the best electricity rates and switch to a new provider if they find one that offers better services or prices.

This revolutionary change in the way the market operates was said to potentially disrupt the business of state and municipal utilities, however, because the billing for energy generation, transmission and distribution is separate, it has not had the effect the public believed would be the result.

Now, ComEd, one of the largest utilities in the region, has released a statement saying that the company supports and encourages switching electricity providers to attain the best electricity rate.

“ComEd supports and encourages customers to shop for electricity among the dozens of certified alternative suppliers. Customers should explore any opportunities to save money on their bills, whether that’s through shopping or energy efficiency,” said Anne Pramaggiore, president and CEO, ComEd. “ComEd will still deliver electricity safely and reliably to every home and business in Northern Illinois, regardless of the customer’s choice of supplier.”
